Around 2% of the population suffer from tennis elbow–mostly people who are in the second half of their working life. The pain is felt on the outside of the elbow and occurs primarily in athletes during strenuous movement of the wrist and arm joints, especially when the forearm muscles are suddenly subject to heavy strain. What Is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow, also called lateral epicondylitis, occurs after unilateral or heavy strain.

The following activities can lead to tennis elbow if they are performed repeatedly or too intensively:

  • Sport: tennis, rowing, bodybuilding
  • Manual activities: painting, carpentry, using screwdrivers
  • Lifting heavy loads
  • Music, such as playing the piano
  • Working at a checkout
  • Working at a computer

Monotonous or intense strain cause the tendons and their attachment points on the outer elbow to become irritated and possibly inflamed.

Symptoms of Tennis Elbow

Symptoms only become apparent when the tendons move or are touched. This affects the upper and lower arm as well as the hand. The pain can occur on one or both sides of the body.

Other symptoms of tennis elbow include:

  • Symptoms that get worse with stress
  • Pain when shaking heads vigorously
  • Limited hand function: for example, those affected find it difficult to grasp things in their hand

If tennis elbow is severe, pain can also occur at night.

How Is Tennis Elbow Treated?

Movements responsible for the typical symptoms of tennis elbow should be avoided once treatment starts. If this is only possible to a limited extent at work, it can be helpful to adapt work processes, for example by using a cordless screwdriver instead of a screwdriver. Targeted training of the arm can also improve mobility so that the symptoms subside more rapidly. If further therapies are required to accelerate the healing process or initiate complete healing of the tennis elbow, ACP therapy is recommended to rebuild the injured tissue without side effects.

How long does it take for tennis elbow to heal?

Once the cause of the pain is eliminated, the pain usually subsides within a few weeks. However, for over 50% of patients it takes up to a year to become pain-free. Treatment depends partly on the severity of the pain. If tennis elbow is not treated, it can lead to chronic inflammation, which in the long term weakens the tendon and can lead to injury.
